which website
Are Don tracks available from somewhere other than iTunes? The article doesn't mention the source of the data or any numbers.25 Sep 2006 13:53

Downloads
Thanks Shama for the links.

Sid: Apart from iTunes, portals like musicindiaonline.com and raaga.com provide the songs via streaming only. They do not allow downloads. But yes any computer geek can rip the music
I guess musicindiaonline is giving information based on the number of people accessing the songs through various legitimate portals.

for vineet
a) raaga.com,musicindiaonline etc all have cheap low quality audio, which skips 90% of the music.
b) its illegal to rip music off the web like that, it amounts to piracy.

90% of the mp3s you get from illegal websites and P2P clients are ripped and decoded by amateurs. Some of their sources are very poor quality , and they mostly use a free and very poor mp3 decoder, which leads to unwanted artifacts like clicks and hisses.

then comes the 10,000 dollar question of mastering. mp3 mastering is different from CD mastering, so ripping an mp3 off a CD aint always the best thing to do. A lot of newer western albums are mastered differently for digital downloads from sites like iTunes etc. So it makes sense to buy them from iTunes etc. I dont think thats the case for good quality (quality as in recording ,mixing, mastering) indian albums. Hence if u wanna listen to high quality versions a nicely done indian song..lets say from the movie Devdas or KANK for eg, your best bet is to buy the CD, and listen to it on a good home stereo system.

the same is true for newer remastered version of older classics.

Agree with Jay
Totally agree with you Jay.
As mentioned by you the quality of sound in these portals is really pathetic.
In fact also want to bring to the point as to whether broadcasting license over the internet should be granted at all. Aren;t we making it easier for piracy.
In India the broadcast rights are provided by the IPRS for a fee. IPRS claims that they compensate the music producers, composers and other artists through their revenue. Not sure if that is happening at all.
May be Ehsaan can answer this.

raaga.com etc
for an audiophile like me, the crap music on raaga.com etc hardly amounts to piracy. I wont even listen to it, even if you pay me money. mp3s 12kbps and above , then you enter the grey area. though audiophile snobs like me (), may still shun such music, the quality is still much better than audio cassette tape quality, and hence should be considered piracy at least in india, where majority of public unfortunately is still mostly exposed to low quality Mono music only. (last time I went to delhi, I had a fight with our cable wala.. he was bradcasting substandard mono audio on all channels.. whats the point of having big tvs with stereo vereo in india i wonder)

Welcome!
Hey Vineeth, Jay, Prasad!!

You are more than welcome Vineeth!

I must admit that I do listen to olden goldies on musicindia online, in fact have my own collection there!! Admittedly the quality is extremely poor, but any music taken off from the internet looses its original bite!!

Really lovely to read all your threads!!

Cheers!

MP3s
I own almost all the original CDs of the mp3s I have, and have downloaded about 5 or 6 mp3s off the internet, Don being one of them (I couldn't find the CD here no matter how much I tried, but will buy it as soon as I find it). All are @320 kbps, and a few @FLAC and @APE lossless 26 Sep 2006 07:48
jayswami
doesnt matter if they r 320kbp
anything over 190kbps is oversampled for mp3s( for encoding 44.1khz sampled 16 bit CD audio at around 1140 kbps), as the transparency threshold for good encoders is agreed to be somewhere around 190Kbps- this is debatable though. but thats besides the point. The quality of the mp3 encoder also matters. the free encoders you get like the "lame" mp3 encoder aint good enough (there is a read its called lame). And then there is the inherent loss of audio quality during the process of mp3 encoding, this loss is unavoidable due to the nature of mp3 encoding. To make things worse, the audio is mastered for teh CD, and when you compress it to mp3, the mastering actually proved detrimental in some cases. So a lot of these mastering studios have their proprietry mp3 mastering techniques to make the best soudning mp3s.

of course none of this matters for 90% of the indian movie albums that come out I guess, as in general the sound quality is pretty low.. but lately things are changing and every year u have at least a handful of high quality recordings, mixed and mastered well.. But I dont think they still master for webdownloadable mp3s.

sorry for useless info

FLAC
sorry i missed the FLAC point.. Ive been trying to figure out why FLAC doesnt sound right to my ears..
because technically speaking, its lossless compression, so you get the same bitstream back.. but it doesnt sound the same, it always sounds drier.. but then its probably just me... and i suffer from tinnitis any ways i will shutup for good this time.

Informative
Hey Jay,
That was informative piece.
Which MP3 encoder would you recommend if I have to convert my audio cd's into mp3 format.

Shama, even I feel that musicindiaonline is a great repository of musical work. You can get almost all work of all known Indian music genres. But yes they can do a bit to improve the recording and sound quality

french fry
what's funny is that they never use the words French Fry, the only thing that is supposed to be a fry

this song is really ghetto, it makes himesh look like r.d. burman

yeah, it's hilarious, shama :) glad you enjoyed it.

im also glad that SEL has rescued us from the depths of such....erm....music, from back in the 80s. lol

Lyricist
Prasad,
Any idea abt who the lyricist is?
Well on a positive side atleast this song has made me LOL.

28 Sep 2006 05:12
prasad
not sure
not sure who the lyricist is, but i think bappida might have written it himself

personally my fav line in the whole thing is "sarson ka tu saag hai, main makki di roti" lol
28 Sep 2006 05:33

yeah
yeah, i agree, himesh gets horrible lyrics from time to time

the lyrical depth of "my love for you is not a one night stand, oh jaana love you miss you har lamha" really touched my heart

i think sameer needs to be punitively banished from the industry for a month or two just for writing that single song, lol

non-sense thread
shama you said you talk very specific and its all sel sel and sel!isnt it hypocritical to waste more than half a thread talking about a hideous chicken fry song which has none to do with sel?and dch finds you talk sense?its comical 28 Sep 2006 12:33

credit
well, even more credit to javed akhtar & gulzar who are literally the only people who write decent lyrics anymore (although i had grammatical issues with "its THE time to disco...." who says 'the' like that???)28 Sep 2006 16:56

mp3 mastering
Nice info Jay, didn't know mp3s on itunes etc. were mastered from the original tracks, not the CD ones.29 Sep 2006 22:09
jayswami
to Sid singh
not all of them, but the ones that are sound good..
for example BT's new album This Binary Universe.. sounds great... But dont buy it from iTunes.. get the Audio CD/DVD combo as you got to see/hear all tracks on 5.1 digital sorround.. its a masterpiece really!
30 Sep 2006 01:48
Sid Singh
iTunes
i'll try "the binary universe" on my new Zune player. i'm not going anywre near iTunes :)

hopefully it will be out on HD-DVD too.

speaking of slide guitar, does the opening of freebird count? just saw lynyrd skynyrd perform that in a bbc studio. if you have comcast you can catch it on "on demand". it also had a single from continuum. thats another one i need to catch up on.

hehehe
this thread is like a linked list.. it has jumped from topic to topic and it started off as a discussion of Don . Anyways since u mentioned comcast on demand, lets make another jump in topic! and that reminds me, if u have HD, then check the listings on the INHD channel. They are showing Pink Floyd The Wall movie in upconverted 1080i HD repeatedly, its really cool in HD! i am just going upstairs to watch lynnard skynnard now!05 Oct 2006 06:00
Sid Singh
InHD
Didn't know they were showing The Wall - i'll record it in my DVR. I do have the DVD, so can figure if my DVD player does better upscaling or InHD :)05 Oct 2006 16:55
Sid Singh
The Wall in HD
Ahh, just realized - The Wall was probably shot on 35 mm @ 24fps. So InHD converted it from the original movie to 1080i, while my DVD player is upconverting from 480i to 1080i, which was originally downcoverted to 480i - I have to see The Wall in HD now!!

Ehsaan, if you are still reading this, since you and Vishal-Shekhar are pals, who are pals with Rohan Sippy, can you casually mention that I would love to see the original Sholay converted to HD-DVD with Dolby 5.1 sound? :)
